Somber Days (title susceptable to change)

Posted by tom5coat Jan. 15, 2008 @ 1:19 AM EST

The first spray of sun light began to peak over the city walls. Plants seemed to come to life as the warm rays washed over their petals. The mammals and birds did not share their welcome of the sun as they scurried and flew into the lower and higher levels of the towering sky scrapers. Minutes passed as the heat settled across the city with no incident. All at once la muerte florece closed the four massive purple petals, protecting themselves with a thick green outer skin.
The smaller plants opened up to the sun hoping to harbor some much needed warmth. Only ten minutes had passed since the sun had risen, and the petals on the smaller plants began to wilt. Their petals simultaneously began to dry at a quickening pace. Petals fell from plants and small flowers, brown and dehydrated. The process was quick. Soon every plant that the sun touched was bald except for la muerte florece. Only small plumes of steam rose from their enclosed bodies.
Jim looked out from the office building in opposition. He forced the gas mask over his head as he prepared to make the run. He watched the shadows as they moved under the buildings, they were his only hope. He had done this many times, but never got used to it. The outfit he had to wear was stifling, but that was mostly due to the increasingly high temperature. At least it was easy to move in. It had to be for this.
